Following Jesus

If you look very hard at the world…at life in general…or at your own life, you will see there is an intrinsic emptiness. There is a strife between your existence and something you know you need but can’t reach. We all try to fill up this emptiness every day: with pleasures, with achievements, even with numbness to the situation.

If you think about it very long, you can see that you are on a journey…but to where? If you have lived a while, you have most likely considered the question, “Why am I here?”

You wonder about these things because God created you and “planted eternity in your heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

God loves you. Truly. He doesn’t want any person to be separated from Him (2 Peter 3:9), but there is a big problem: every human is born under the curse of sin (Romans 3:23). Sin, a disease of the soul, separates all of us from God. But, because of His great love for you, He made a way for you to know Him–up close and personal. The payment for sin is death…but God did not want you to die and forever be apart from Him. That is why He sent Jesus to die in your place and pay the price for your sin (Romans 6:23). Jesus took all your unworthiness and offered you His righteousness instead. Through Jesus, you can have peace with God!

The eternal life that Jesus offers is the only thing that can really fill up the emptiness inside you. No other relationship, job, house, car, achievement, substance, thrill or dream can ever heal the rift in your heart. Only Jesus can bridge the chasm between you and God and reconcile your heart to His.

Do you want to accept the gift Jesus is offering you? It cost Him His life, yet He offers it freely to you. All you have to do is open your heart and receive Him (Romans 10:9-10).

If you want to open your heart to receive Jesus, pray this with me, or something like it in your own words:

Lord Jesus, I see that I am a sinner. I need you to come into my life and wash my sin away. Forgive me for my sin. I believe that you are God’s Son and that you died for me. I receive your gift of life and ask you to send your Spirit to live in me. Thank you for saving me! Thank you for making me new and bringing me to my heavenly Father! Fill me with your Holy Spirit and help me learn your ways!  In your name, Jesus, amen.

If you opened your heart to Jesus and prayed just now, then you are ALIVE with eternal life! He has come into your heart and washed your sin away forever. You belong to Him and His Spirit is in you!

Now what?

The best thing you can do as you begin to follow Jesus is to read the Bible. The Bible is God’s love letter to you and it will reveal more of who He is to your heart. The Holy Spirit will teach you as you read, and you will learn and understand and grow the more you read it.

It is also a good idea to find a group of other Jesus followers to connect with. Navigating life together is how God intended us to live! Look for a good church or group that teaches the Bible and get involved.

Welcome to the family, my friend! You just made the best decision you possibly could! If you prayed and received Jesus, would you take a moment to leave us a comment so we can pray for you?

May God bless each one who reads this page!

Most sincerely,
Tim & Crista Ashworth
